Global Oil Prices Soar to Highest Level in 9 Months

On Wednesday (November 25), the global oil prices reached their highest level since early March 2020, owing to an improved global economic outlook and vaccine optimism.

The World Trade Index (WTI) crude gained 1.14 percent and is trading at $45.43 per barrel, while Brent went up by 1.23 percent and is trading at $48.40 per barrel.

The index showed upward momentum following the announcement by the pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca on Monday that its COVID-19 vaccine was 70 percent effective in trials and could be up to 90 percent effective.

However, any viable vaccine is not likely to be ready for mass use in the next few months, meaning lockdowns and travel restrictions will be in place into next year, said a news report. The delay in the availability of the vaccine makes it likely that OPEC+ (Organization of the Petroleum Export Countries (OPEC) and allies including Russia) will continue production cuts into 2021, as a meeting is set to start on November 30 following technical talks this week.

Govt Reduces Petrol Price by Rs. 1.71 Per Liter

OPEC+ producers have been withholding supplies to support prices after pandemic lockdowns earlier this year caused a significant decline in demand. They are currently due to increase production by 2 million barrels per day from January 2021, which makes about 2 percent of global demand before the pandemic.

However, Pakistani experts on the matter are of the opinion that this increase in oil prices is temporary. Osama Rizvi, an energy market observer and oil market analyst at Primary Vision Network, spoke to ProPakistani, saying,

The current increase in oil prices is only temporary. Fundamentals do not justify it. If we look at the Google Mobility Data, it has been almost the same for over weeks, showing little to no movement. High-frequency data points show a plateauing of global economic activity. Jet Fuel Demand is at its lowest and will not recover any time soon. Consumer behavior has changed, so have preferences and spending patterns.

He said that the demand for oil is still very low, and floating storage is high when compared to the 5 years seasonally adjusted levels. The same is the case with inventory, he said. “Now that the news of vaccination has already been priced in, chances are that oil prices will make a correction. I believe it is at least 35 to 40 percent overpriced,” he added.

Samsung Postpones Galaxy Z Flip 2

During the year, Samsung launches two sets of flagship devices, the S-series and the Note series. The former is usually set to launch in February, while the latter launches in September. However, Samsung is revamping its product lineup and product release schedule in 2021.

The company has officially announced that it will not be launching the Note series and has pulled the launch of the Galaxy S-series back to January. Reportedly, the series was supposed to be accompanied by the much-anticipated Galaxy Z Flip 2. However, according to a recent publication by The Elec, a South Korean state-backed magazine, the new Galaxy Z Flip will not be joining the S21 series in early 2021. In fact, it will come out only after the January-March quarter.

This year, the Samsung Galaxy S20 series and the Galaxy Z Flip were unveiled at the same Unpacked event in February. One of the main reasons behind the delay in 2021 is to prevent the Smartphones from cannibalizing each other’s sales, especially since there will be no Note series next year.

Based on the leaks and rumors, next year for Samsung will start with the Galaxy S21 trio, followed by the Galaxy Z Flip 2 and then the Galaxy Fold series.

In other news, the South Korean Smartphone maker has reportedly ordered an initial batch of 6 million units for the S21 series at launch day. The numbers are similar to 2020’s initial batch. Samsung believes that foldable phones will drive growth in 2021. The company has planned to expand its foldable lineup to as many as five models.

Sigma Motorsports to Launch a Hatchback in Pakistan

Sigma Motorsports, a Lahore-based motorcycle dealership that imports and sells various enthusiast motorcycles in Pakistan, has announced via their social media account that they are gearing up to introduce an all-new passenger vehicle in Pakistan.

Credits: Sigma Motorsports
A few images of the vehicle were posted by Sigma Motorsports on their social media account. The images do not give away much, but it is evident in the photos that the vehicle is likely a subcompact hatchback. Reports also suggest that the car will use a hybrid powertrain. The roof of the vehicle is also a solar panel, which acts as an additional source of charging for the car’s electric motor.

Details are quite scarce about the performance, features, and price of the car, however, reports do suggest that the launch of the car can happen as soon as next week, although nothing has been confirmed by Sigma Motorsports yet.

The hatchback market is also quite low on variety if the imported cars are taken out of the equation. With that said, the reported new arrival seems to have all the promise of being a strong contender in the local car market. However, the pricing is likely to be a huge factor in the vehicle’s appeal to the masses. Whether or not Sigma Motorsports will be able to create a niche for themselves remains to be seen.

Discord Will Soon be Worth $7 Billion After a New Round of Funding

Discord, the instant messaging and voice/video chat service for gamers turned 5 years old this year and will soon be worth $7 billion once it secures its latest round of funding. The new funding comes just a few months after the $100 million investment that raised the company’s value to $3.5 billion.

The COVID-19 pandemic had a major role to play in Discord’s rise in valuation as it almost doubled its corporate value thanks to the increased adoption rate of social services amid lockdowns. The messaging app showed explosive growth over the past few months, almost doubling its monthly active users to reach 120 million and 800,000 downloads.

The recently popularized social deduction game Among Us also contributed to this increase. US Senator Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s Among Us stream on Twitch reached 435,000 viewers recently which also contributed to the rise in Discord’s usage.

The idea behind launching Discord was to facilitate the gaming industry amid the rise of multiplayer gaming, but more recently it has gone far beyond the gaming community and is being used by many for their social needs.

Co-founders Jason Citron and Stanislav Vishnevskiy noted that it wasn’t just about video games anymore and expressed hopes that it would continue to grow as it has over the past few years.

As far as the Apple Watch is concerned, both Apple Watch Series 6 and Apple Watch SE are selling well. The report attributes its sale to the “innovative health management functions and improved design.”

Furthermore, the demand for M1-powered MacBooks is also higher than expected, while AirPods sales are lower. Kuo predicts that AirPods sales will either plateau or decline by 5-10% sometime in the first half of next year. The market will see an estimated growth of 20% YoY.

Demand for Pakistan’s Textile Reaches All-Time High

The demand for Pakistan’s textile products has reached an all-time high, which has caused a demand-supply gap of approximately 700 million meters of cloth.

The Faisalabad textile industry is facing the highest supply shortage in its history. The normal production capacity for the textile sector is 90 crore meters. However, despite the mills being operational around the clock, currently, there is a shortage to meet demand.

The Prime Minister took notice of this and issued orders for the resolution of any supply chain problems. He also took to Twitter and said,

As the Faisalabad textile industry sees a massive rise in demand and export orders, I have instructed the Commerce and Industries Ministries to ensure all necessary support to the textile sector to enable them to meet their growing demands.

The surge in demand is not only coming from the export destinations, as the local demand for textile products is also reported to have significantly increased.
