Oppo Takes on Google Glass With AR Glasses 2021

Oppo’s Inno Day event kicked off today where the Chinese tech giant unveiled several new technologies including the rollable display phone. Last year, the company unveiled AR glasses and Oppo is now back with a much-improved version called AR Glasses 2021.

Last year’s glasses resembled a VR headset, but this time around, the AR glasses look much more like casual eyewear. Oppo says that the new AR Glasses 2021 are 75% lighter than before and connecting it to an Oppo Find X2 via USB C gets a major performance boost thanks to its flagship specs.

The display has 53% better contrast, 98% better brightness uniformity, and 40% improved pixels per degree compared to last year’s glasses thanks to Birdbath optical solution. Speaking of the display, it is a 0.71-inch OLED panel that gets light refracted through a stereoscope to the eye. There is also a large-amplitude speaker built-in.

You can use your phone as a touchpad once it is paired with the glasses and it can also track your hands and fingers. It can recognize 21 different markers on a single hand.

The glasses can provide a theater-like viewing experience for AR live streaming content or local HD videos. It also supports AR-based online games, virtual furniture placement in your home, or taking AR pictures that capture real-life and virtual scenes at the same time.

There is no word on a launch date or pricing yet, but since the glasses have been officially showcased, it will not be long before they are up for sale.

USF Has Spent Rs. 68 Billion to Expand Telecommunication Services to Underserved Areas

Some areas in Balochistan as well as South Waziristan and Kurram areas of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa still lack access to basic telephony and Mobile broadband services, despite billions of rupees invested by the Universal Service Fund (USF) to extend cellular, broadband internet, fiber optics, and other telecommunication services to un-served or underserved areas.

USF has spent around Rs. 68.186 billion for the aforementioned purposes.

USF was created in 2007 to stretch cellular, broadband internet, fiber optics, and other telecommunication services to un-served or underserved areas. All telecom companies have been contributing 1.5 percent of their revenues to the USF.

Some of the areas that are still under- or un-served include South Waziristan, North Waziristan, Orakzai, Kurram, Jhal Magsi, Dera Bugti, Nasirabad, and Jaffarabad.

According to officials, the challenges that the USF faced in providing telecom services to such areas included rugged terrains, sparse population, harsh weather, lack of electricity, poor logistics, and security clearance, among other localized challenges.

Sources told ProPakistani that the government subsidizes projects in areas that do not support the business plans of the telecom operators.

According to official documents, of the total Rs. 68.186 billion subsidies, Ufone took a significant chunk of subsidy i.e. Rs. 18.219 billion (26.72 percent), PTCL took Rs. 16.134 billion (23.6 percent), Telenor had Rs. 18.184 billion (26.67 percent), Zong received Rs. 5.613 billion (8.23 percent), Wateen took Rs. 4.847 (7.11 percent), World Call’s share was Rs. 1.273 billion (1.87 percent), and Jazz took Rs. 2.25 billion (3.3 percent).

Telecommunication coverage was recorded around 44 percent in 2006-07, which has increased to around 74 percent since the creation of USF.

After the issuance of 3G and 4G licenses by the federal government, this program has been redesigned to include the broadband equivalent data (internet) services as a compulsory component. For new projects, the powering of telecommunication sites through solar energy was also made a part of each project.

An official said that the government may amend the USF rules and expand its scope by including e-education and e-health. A proposal was under consideration with respect to suspending telecom operators’ contribution of 1.5 percent of their annual revenue to USF. However, so far, no final decision has been announced by the government in this regard.

The government, as per its Digital Pakistan vision, is considering expanding the scope of USF and introducing e-education and e-health, the official added.

Samsung Will Not Launch a Galaxy Note Phone in 2021: Rumors

Rumors around the Galaxy Note lineup getting discontinued have been going on for a while and the speculation is starting to gain more traction thanks to notable tipsters. Max Weinbach and Ice Universe, both of whom have been accurate in their past leaks have reason to believe that there will be no Galaxy Note device coming this year.

According to Max, the Samsung flagships to expect this year include the S21 lineup, the new Z Fold, Z Flip, and Fan Editions for each of them except for the Z Flip. He added that 3 of these handsets will have S Pen support as well.

The list does not mention a single Note device and that doesn’t necessarily mean that there will be none this year. However, the inclusion of the S Pen in other phones fuels the speculation that there might just be no Note phone in 2021.

Additionally, Ice Universe also points out that there is currently no information on the development of the next Note series. This could just mean that it is too early for any news, but given all the other speculation, it seems likely that we may not see the Galaxy Note 21.

Oppo Unveils an Expandable Smartphone Concept

Smartphone OEMs like TCL and LG have been teasing the concept of a rollable display for a while now. However, we have not seen anything substantial yet.

At its INNO day conference today, the BBK-owned Smartphone make Oppo unveiled its Oppo X 2021 concept smartphone. Oppo is no stranger to shaking up the norms of designs in the smartphone industry, as evident from its Find X series. This new concept phone is all about its “continuously variable OLED display.”

The Oppo X 2021 does not have a fixed display; rather, it alternates between 6.7 and 7.4-inches in diagonal with a simple swipe button. The software interface adapts accordingly for an optimal experience.

According to Engadget, the prototype that was shown to them toggled between two screen sizes, with the video resizing itself on the fly to fill the screen. Moreover, the system menus and Twitter also switched between their phone interface and tablet interface to match the screen size.

Construction
The smartphone basically works like a motorized scroll. A large part of the OLED panel is laminated onto a “Warp Track” for improved strength, and it goes around a Roll motor to expand and contract. Since the display has dual rolling motors underneath, there is no foldable phone-like crease.

The concept phone features a dynamic frame that has a fixed frame underneath it. The 2-in-1 plate design has no segment gaps, which helps in preventing the screen from collapsing. The company revealed that it applied for 122 patents for this project, 12 of which were on the scroll mechanism alone.

Launch Plans
As far as the launch plans for the Oppo X 2021 are concerned, Levin Liu, OPPO Vice President and Head of OPPO Research Institute, stressed that the smartphone is still in the concept phase. Hence, it does not plan on bringing the phone to consumers anytime soon.

Apple iPhone 12 Mini And Pro Max Are A Lot Tougher Than Before [Video]

The iPhone 12 and 12 Pro recently made rounds at JerryRigEverything‘s renowned durability test, showing remarkable sturdiness and durability. Now the other two siblings in the lineup, the iPhone 12 Mini and Pro Max have appeared on the durability test and they are no different.

Once again, the new ceramic shield protection on the screen proved to be more scratch-resistant on both phones. Though it does get scratched at levels 6 and 7 at Moh’s hardness scale, the scratches left behind were fainter than other smartphones.

As for the sides, the iPhone 12 Mini gets more prominent scratches as it has an aluminum coating, whereas the Pro Maax features stainless steel which is more resistant. The back of both phones is scratch resistant as well.

The burn and bend tests were no different either. The screens of the two phones took no damage when exposed to an open flame for over 50 seconds. The oleophobic coating on the screen melted away but the pixels took absolutely no damage. Neither of the phones showed any signs of flexing or structural damage during the bend test either.
