Moderna’s Vaccine Donated by US President Has Reached Pakistan

A shipment of 2.5 million doses of Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine donated by the US President, Joe Biden, has reached Pakistan today.

Earlier this week, the White House’s Press Secretary, Jen Psaki, announced that 2.5 million doses of Moderna’s vaccine will be shipped to Pakistan as part of the US President’s efforts to end the pandemic.

Yesterday, the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) also granted Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) to Moderna’s vaccine.

According to DRAP’s guidelines, Moderna’s vaccine is safe for use among adults aged 18 years or above. It is also suitable for pregnant and lactating women and people with underlying health conditions.

The vaccine is unsafe for use among people aged less than 18 years. It is also not suitable for people who have severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) or an immediate allergic reaction to any of the ingredients of the vaccine.

Moderna’s vaccine consists of two doses administered 2 weeks apart. Its efficacy is 50.8% after the initial dose and 92.1% after the booster dose. Two weeks after the second dose, Moderna’s vaccine becomes 94.1% effective at preventing COVID-19.

Moderna’s vaccine needs to be stored in a freezer between -50C and -15C while transportation. During the transfer, the vaccine must be stored in the original carton and protected from light. Unpunctured vials of Moderna’s vaccine may be stored in the refrigerator between 2C and 8C for up to 30 days while punctured vials may be stored between 2C and 25C for up to 12 hours.
