Holding said that the T20 format is not cricket and the importance of Test cricket has diminished due to the emergence of franchise T20 leagues all around the world. He said that West Indies will find it really difficult to get back to the top of Test cricket if they continue to invest their resources in the shortest format of the game.

He said that West Indies can win as many T20 World Cups as they want, but it will not enable them to revive cricket in the Caribbean and will not change the fact that they are not a good Test cricket team. He added that it will be really difficult for teams to perform in Test cricket if they continue to give importance to T20s.

“Many West Indies players are not interested in playing for West Indies. When you are earning 600,000 or 800,000 dollars for six weeks, what are you going to do? I don’t blame the cricketers. I blame the administrators. West Indies will win T20 tournaments which aren’t cricket,” Holding said.

Holding’s comments came days after former Australian leg-spinner, Shane Warne, criticized the franchise T20 leagues. Warne said that players who prefer to take part in the IPL instead of playing cricket for their country should not be considered for national team selection. He said that it is not worth it to pick such players.
