The Sindh Home Department has granted special powers to officers in charge of police stations (SHOs) to take stern action against any contravention of the orders of the provincial government related to COVID-19 restrictions.
A notification in this regard was issued on Monday in connection to the directives issued on 30 July 2021. It said that the officials of law enforcement agencies, not below the rank of SHOs, have been empowered to take legal action against any violation of COVID-19 restrictions across the province.

“Beside deputy commissioners, assistant commissioners, labor officers concerned as well as personnel of law enforcement agencies (LEAs) not below the rank of inspector police (or equivalent rank for other LEAs), the additional deputy commissioners, makhtarkars and officers in charge of police stations are also empowered under section 3(l) of The Sindh Epidemic Diseases Act, 2014 (The Sindh Act VIII of 2015) to take legal action on any act in contravention of the COVID-19 restrictions.”
The Sindh government had reinforced a complete lockdown in the province from 1st to 8th August to stem the spread of the coronavirus. The decision to close down businesses across the province has attracted the ire of the federal government.

On Sunday, Prime Minister Imran Khan had suggested Sindh Chief Minister, Syed Murad Ali Shah, opt for a smart lockdown instead of a full-fledged lockdown in the province.
While responding to a citizen’s phone call during a telethon, the premier said that the country cannot afford a complete lockdown because most of the people rely on daily wages.
“How can we impose a lockdown on people who don’t have resources or food?” he had asked.
