Even though Oppo has not launched a foldable smartphone yet, it has been filing patents for a while now. Most of them are usually generic and there is not a lot of information about the technology the smartphone maker plans on using.
Recently four patents by the company surfaced on the internet. The smartphones mentioned in the patents feature a weird design, which makes them look like a chocolate bar.
These patents were filed by Guangdong Oppo Mobile Telecommunications Corp Ltd. with the Japan Patent Office (JPO) on May 11, 2020.
Patent 1
The first patent details a design with six blocks and two hinges. The images show that the phone folds inwards and comes with a dual-camera setup with an LED flash at the bottom.
Patent 2
The second patent also refers to a phone with two hinges and six blocks. However, this one has a triple camera setup with an LED flash located at the back of the phone instead of the front. It folds both inwards and outward.
Patent 3
The third smartphone has a total of eight blocks and two hinges. There are no visible cameras, hence, it most likely has in-display cameras.
Patent 4
This phone also has eight blocks and two hinges. It folds inwards and sports a triple camera setup on the back, accompanied by an LED flash.
None of the smartphones mentioned are official products. Moreover, they are quite peculiar to be launched for the consumer market. Hence, it’s highly unlikely that the company will adopt either of the designs for its first foldable.
