Another Prolonged Amazon Web Services Outage Impacts Thousands of Online Services

Over the years, Amazon’s internet infrastructure service, dubbed the Amazon Web Services, has become the backbone of many online services and applications. Hence, a small outage has a massive effect on the services attached to the platform.

The core provider of internet infrastructure services went through a major outage yesterday, and since then, its spotty uptime has caused significant issues to thousands of services. Almost all major cloud-based software apps that rely on AWS for their backend are currently impacted, from Adobe Spark to Roku and from Flickr to Autodesk. Other impacted services also include smart devices that cannot access their private cloud, cryptocurrency portals, and streaming and podcast services.

Most of these services are announcing an outage via Twitter. At the same time, users have taken to DownDetector to report an outage on services like Ring, Prime Music, Pokemon Go, Roku, MeetUp.com, League of Legends, Anchestry.com, Chime, and others.

Unfortunately, a full recovery might still be a few hours away.

While addressing the issue, Amazon said,

We continue to work towards recovery of the issue affecting the Kinesis Data Streams API in the US-EAST-1 Region. We also continue to see an improvement in error rates for Kinesis and several affected services, but expect full recovery to still take up to a few hours.

Around 4 hours after the outage, Amazon updated AWS’s dashboard, saying that it was “observing steady signs of recovery” of the problem affecting the Kinesis Data Streams API in the US-EAST-1 Region.

The company has still not given a definite answer about when the service will be fully back online.

Morris Garages (MG) had announced its arrival in Pakistan in June this year. The China-based British automaker has reportedly started its operations here in association with JW Park Autos.

In recent weeks, MG’s social media page stated that the automaker will also be introducing a midsize SUV and a pickup truck to its lineup in Pakistan. The automaker had posted images of the Gloster SUV and the Extender, a Sports Utility pickup truck, with coming soon caption its official Facebook page.

On 12 September, the owner of JW Park Motors and a key stakeholder of MG Pakistan, Javed Afridi, posted a video teaser of a new arrival in the SUV market of Pakistan. The teaser featured the MG Gloster, a midsize luxury SUV, that is based on the creation of the Chinese automaker Maxus and is being sold across various continents as the ‘D90’. Note that MG is a contingent of the Chinese automaker SIAC that owns Maxus.

The Gloster is a proper ‘body-on-frame’ SUV equipped with a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder diesel engine that makes 215 horsepower and 480 newton-meters of torque. All the power is sent to either the rear wheels or all the wheels, depending on whether the variant is a 6-speed manual or an 8-speed automatic transmission. It is also offered with an all-electric motor in Australia and New Zealand.

However, its All-Wheel Drive variant only comes with an automatic transmission option.

Upon arrival, the two heavyweights are likely to go up against the Toyota Fortuner and Hilux respectively. The details of their launch dates and prices are still undisclosed, and until any official details are revealed, all we can do is wait.

Speaking to the media, Dr. Reza Baqir said that Pakistan has received approximately $2 million through digital accounts daily since the introduction of these digital accounts. “Overseas Pakistanis have been opening more than 700 Roshan Pakistan Digital accounts every day”, SBP Governor said, adding that around 1,200 accounts are being opened on weekends.

Microsoft Delayed Series X and S to Get Additional Features From AMD

Microsoft delayed the production of its Xbox Series X and S consoles to get the additional RDNA 2 features, the new GPU architecture from chipmaker AMD. This was revealed by the Vice President of Xbox Games, Phil Spencer during an interview with The Verge.

He said that Sony started manufacturing the PlayStation 5 earlier because it didn’t wait for AMD to finalize the design of its new GPU architecture. Microsoft wanted the full set of features, which is why production started off late in the Summer. This is why the Xbox Series X is the only console with full hardware support for all RDNA 2 capabilities.

The list of features includes hardware-accelerated Ray-tracing, Mesh Shaders, Variable Rate Shading, Sampler Feedback Streaming, and much more. AMD says that both the PS5 and Series X have support for RDNA 2 features, but PS5 lacks 2 of them which improve performance.

Variable Rate Shading and Sampler Feedback Streaming appear to be missing from the PlayStation 5. The former allows the GPU to efficiently work on different parts of the screen so it can work more on areas that matter and less on those which don’t. The latter is a feature that optimizes bandwidth from textures as they are loaded from the SSD.

However, the PS5 does have support for hardware-accelerated Ray tracing and Mesh Shaders. It will be interesting to see Xbox games utilize these features and how the performance compares with the PlayStation 5.

Here’s Why Pakistan Rejects Israel is Trending on Twitter

In line with Prime Minister Imran Khan’s stance, Pakistani Twitter users have rejected the idea of Pakistan opening ‘channels of communication’ with Israel, as the hashtag #PakistanReject_Israel became the top trend on Twitter on Thursday.

Pakistan is currently one of the few nations that do not recognize Israel. Pakistan has been a staunch supporter of the rights of Palestinians.

Though Prime Minister Khan has categorically rejected the idea of normalizing ties with the Jewish country, a faction of media continues to raise the issue to cause a stir.

The latest episode started earlier this week when a renowned Pakistan journalist, Mubasher Luqman, appeared on an Israeli TV channel and supported the idea of normalization between Pakistan and Israel. He also praised Israel as a nation and said it was a reality, not a dream anymore.

Luqman’s statement was followed by a tweet from another pro-government journalist Kamran Khan tweet, who first broke the news of the meeting between Saudi Crown Prince and Israeli Prime Minister and then called for Pakistan’s policy shift towards Israel.

The developments over the week renewed the discussion of whether Pakistan was reconsidering its policy for Israel. However, the Foreign Office moved quickly to rubbish the notion on Wednesday. FO spokesperson, Zahid Hafeez Chaudhri, ‘categorically rejected baseless speculation regarding the possibility of recognition of the State of Israel by Pakistan.’

The decision is in line with the public sentiments who see Israel as an illegitimate state that has been established on occupied lands of Palestinians. It was evident on Twitter where people hailed PM Khan as a hero for not succumbing to international pressure to recognize Israel.
