Panasonic has launched its new rugged tablet, the TOUGHBOOK S1, with mid-range specifications and a bulky construction. Even though the device does not come with the latest 2021 mid-range features, it will suffice.
Design and Display
Like most rugged gadgets, the Panasonic TOUGHBOOK S1 has a bulky construction which is not surprising considering it is designed to take a beating. The buttons are big, there are flaps covering the ports, and the screws holding it together are visible. The tablet has an IP65/67 rating and is MIL-STD-810H certified. It can also support drops from up to 5 feet.
The display is a 7-inch WXGA with 1280 x 800 pixels resolution, Anti-reflective (AR) screen treatment, 500 nits brightness, and thick bezels all around.
Internals and Storage
Internally, the device is powered by the Snapdragon 660 processor topped with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of expandable storage.
It also comes with a built-in barcode scanner, a full-sized USB-A port, and a USB-C port. Moreover, the tablet is equipped with a Rain Mode along with the glove mode which is a common feature of rugged mobile devices. The rain mode can detect when raindrops fall on the screen and ignore it while you are using it.
The device ships with Android 10 but will be updated to Android 12.
Cameras
The device comes with a single sensor camera system on the front as well as on the back. However, the exact specifications of the sensors are scarce.
Battery and Pricing
The tablet has a warm-swappable battery which means is that, when you remove the battery, the tablet doesn’t go off as there is another built-in battery that keeps it on for a short while. The main battery is a 3,200 mAh Li-ion 3.8V cell that can provide you with approximately 8 hours of life. The total battery capacity of the device is 5,580mAh.
The company will be selling the tablet with different battery capacities, so you can buy the one that suits you best.
Since this is an enterprise device you will not be able to pick one up at a store. It comes with a matching enterprise-level price tag as well at $2,499.
