Sunn Mere Dil is a mega project by Geo Entertainment which was heavily promoted by the channel. The show has a very talented team with 7th Sky Entertainment in the producer’s chair, Haseeb Hassan as the director while Khalil ur Rehman Qamar wrote the script. Some of the biggest stars of the country were cast in the drama and fans were waiting for it to start airing. The show is out now and it is not what people expected. Interestingly, a debate has started on if the drama is a hit or a flop. The drama has not managed to top the TRP charts and the whole cast and crew including the lead actor Wahaj Ali have been trying to flaunt “high YouTube views” as a meter of success.
Let us analyze today on what went wrong with Sunn Mere Dil:
What Is Sunn Mere Dil
This is not a personal attack on the team. This show had Haseeb Hassan as the director who has dramas like Mann Mayal, Diyar e Dil and Alif. Khalil ur Rehman Qamar the writer has given Mere Paas Tum Ho, Sadqay Tumharay and Landa Bazaar while the lead actors who the makers were banking on Wahaj Ali and Maya Ali are the same actor we saw in Jo Bichar Gaye but Sunn Mere Dil is still a stupid script that makes zero sense and everyone associated with the project seems to not have realized that while they read it.
Sunn Mere Dil is the story of a drunkard billionaire and a girl with zero IQ whom he falls in love with. All the people in this drama are at least 35 years old, and No! THIS IS NOT AGEISM. This means they are mature people with a majority having jobs but all they care about is : MUHABBAT. The billionaire does not care about his work and keeps crying while standing in corners. The guy even gave his bone marrow and still did not get the girl. The girl keeps on trying to establish how self-respecting she is but she will do anything, ANYTHING, for 8 crore. The others are either conniving to get into romantic equations or committing suicides. To make this weird script make sense, WATCH THIS:
In short, Sunn Mere Dil has a bad story, bad performances and zero suspense. It is neither a content oriented drama nor a mass masala script that people watch to kill time.
Content-Oriented Dramas
There are certain dramas that may not climb the TRP chats when they air and they do not break records on YouTube views but their content lives on and people will always come back to them. Alif, directed by Sunn Mere Dil director Haseeb Hassan is one such example. That show was drastically overshadowed on both TV and YouTube due to Mere Paas Tum Ho airing at the same time but it is still a hit as its beautiful and relevant content will keep pulling the audience and it has high rewatch value.
Niche Dramas
There are a few dramas that are considered niche. Dramas like Dunyapur and Gentleman are some niche dramas. Only a specific type of audience will watch these and they are not even made to be watched by everyone. They perform average on both TRP and views but that is how they are expected to perform. They are good dramas and make way for a variety of content to air on prime time.
Massy Dramas
Such dramas have relatable stories and they have the correct amount of masala and big stars in the cast. They gain big numbers on TRP charts and YouTube views and fans love them even if they have loopholes in the story. They do have a coherent script which initially pulls the audience even if they go off track sometimes later on. Dramas like Mere Paas Tum Ho, Tere Bin, Ishq Murshid and Kabhi Main Kabhi Tum are example of big massy dramas.
The Truth About Ratings
TRP charts are important as they ultimately fuel what kind of dramas will be funded by the production houses. The charts also sometimes bring out dramas that did not have high expectations while releasing to the top when the audience starts watching them. Iqtidar is a recent example. But TRPs are also faked sometimes while the other times, bad and stupid content gets ratings like politicians punching each other on live television or drama bahus getting slapped by their in laws. It does not mean that people actually like watching it all. The shock element helps in putting up big numbers.
The Truth About YouTube Views
YouTube views are the new ratings that determine if the drama is doing well or not. Many of our dramas have gotten over 25 million views per episode and get viewership all over the world but unless there are unbelievable views, the show cannot be termed a big hit just on the basis of YouTube views. But Sunn Mere Dil actor Wahaj Ali does not believe that as he flauted his drama’s ratings after getting criticism:
But what cannot be forgotten is that some very vulgar dance videos get millions of views on YouTube in this country. Here is the proof:
What Is A Hit
So, yes the producers are fighting over TRPs vs views and stars like Wahaj Ali are trying to flaunt YouTube views but that will not make a project a hit. A hit show is what actually causes genuine curiosity among the audience. Jalan which people criticized still caused a lot of conversation which makes it a hit. Kabhi Main Kabhi Tum is not a hit due to its millions of views and big ratings, it is a hit because the audience connected to it. Similarly, Alif despite low numbers is also a hit as it is loved and fans rewatch it even after years of it ending.
Sunn Mere Dil on the other hand has zero curiosity value, no one cares about the characters in the show or the arc of anyone in the plot. No one cares if Bilal Abdullah gets Sadaf or not and no one cares if Wahaj Ali looks rich or not with his 8 crore cash change. The drama was marketed as Wahaj’s big one after Tere Bin but a weak script and repetitiveness of 8 crores has made people dislike the basic story which makes Sunn Mere Dil a flop unfortunately.
Conclusion
The actors in this show are extremely talented, the director Haseeb Hassan is one of the best in the game and the writer Khalil ur Rehman Qamar has given a string of hits. Even the production house has poured in a lot of money into the show but no amount of promotion can make the public love a bad project. What everyone involved needs to do is to just wait till the show ends. It will keep getting an okay number on TRP charts and YouTube views but the team needs to cool it a bit on social media and start working on their future projects.
