The investigation of the May 22 crash of Pakistan International Airlines’ flight PK-8303 has been expanded by the Aircraft Accident and Investigation Board (AAIB)
According to the sources, the investigation team started gathering evidence at Lahore airport. The record of the conversation between the air traffic controller and the captain at Lahore has also been obtained. The sources said that the investigation team had also sought last month’s duty roster of the air traffic controller from the Civil Aviation Authority officials in Karachi after it emerged that there was a shortage of staff.
The ill-fated flight crashed in a residential area near the airport in Karachi, killing 97 people on board after pilots reported that both the engines were down. The crash site is still sealed off.
On May 26, a technical team from Airbus arrived from France to investigate the crash. The Airbus team collected all the necessary evidence from the crash site and inspected the runway before departing.
The black boxes reached France on Monday accompanied by a two-member Pakistani investigation team. On Tuesday 2nd June, in the presence of the head of Pakistani Investigation team, Air Commodore Usman Ghani, Airbus experts began decoding the flight data recorder and the cockpit voice recorder of the ill-fated A320, at BEA air accident agency in Le Bourget near Paris. Air Commodore Ghani also met representatives of the Airbus and engine manufacturer company CFM Engines.
After both the black boxes are decoded, the team will be able to determine how the two captains used the plane’s equipment during the whole journey up until the crash.
