All Pakistan Private Schools Association Threatens to Protest Against The Govt

The All Pakistan Private Schools and Colleges Association (APPSCA) on Friday rejected the proposed closure of educational institutions due to the coronavirus pandemic and threatened to hold countrywide protests.

Addressing a press conference against the government’s possible decision to close educational institutions, the office bearers of the APPSCA said that in the case of an extreme emergency, they are ready to close educational institutions from 15 December 2020 to 5 January 2021 in consultation with all the stakeholders.

President APPSCA, Malik Abrar Hussain, said that any attempt to close educational institutions will be unacceptable and that the government should not provoke them to hold nationwide protests.

He stated that in case of an emergency, the APPSCA is ready to close schools from 15 December 2020 to 5 January 2021 in consultation with the stakeholders. He added that strict lockdowns should also be imposed on all the government offices, markets, transport and railways services, and educational institutions, highlighting that thousands of educational institutions that were closed in the lockdown are now facing financial problems.

If the closure of schools is inevitable, the government should first provide a relief package for the private education sector, demanded Hussain, adding that the academic year had already been wasted.

Hussain further said that the Internet is not available to everyone across the country. He asked how would the children in rural and backward areas learn online when there is no electricity in their areas.

He emphasized that the government should not make a final decision without consulting the stakeholders.

Educational institutions had been closed for six months from March to September this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, said Central Secretary-General, Ashraf Hiraj.

The Secretary-General remarked that due to this closure, educational institutions are still suffering from a severe financial crisis.

“We salute the teachers who continued their education through online classes,” said Hiraj, noting that it is very surprising that the government is considering closing schools from 23 November.

It had been announced earlier in the summer that a winter break would not be granted, but now it seems likely that the government is going to call for extended winter vacations.

The officer bearers said that they want to present their recommendations to the government before the meeting scheduled for 23 November.

Five Snapdragon 875 Phones With 100W Fast Charging Are Coming in Q1 2021: Leak

Qualcomm is expected to announce the 5nm Snapdragon 875 SoC next month. Other than incremental performance upgrades, it will also enable 100W fast charging in phones thanks to Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 5 support. This technology is touted to charge phones from 0 to 50% in just 5 minutes.

Notable tipster Digital Chat Station has said that we will see 5 different flagships with support for 100W fast charging in Q1, 2021 alone. All of these will, of course, be powered by the Snapdragon 875 with support for Quick Charge 5.

Samsung’s new Galaxy S21 phones are expected to be one of the first in 2021 to boast 100W fast charging. The Xiaomi MI 11 lineup is also expected to break cover around the same time and the OnePlus 9 is expected to arrive in March as always. All of these phones have already made rounds at the Geekbench benchmark.

Chinese phone maker Meizu is also expected to unveil a flagship device during Q1 next year. No flagship phones are expected from LG early in 2021, as the company has confirmed that it will not be releasing any in the first half.

Of course, it is also possible that none of these brands will release 100W fast charging phones and some other brands will feature them instead. If not the others, at least Xiaomi is likely to release a phone capable of super-fast charging as it already has a few phones featuring the technology.

We’ll have to wait and see until the rumor mill uncovers new information in December.

The authority had also extended the deadline for hiring consultants or consulting firms for the renewal of cellular licenses and an additional spectrum auction in 1800 and 2100 MHz bands in Pakistan, AJ&K, and GB.

The deadline for the submission of bids for hiring consultants for the spectrum auction in AJK & GB has also been extended from 20 October to 5 November 2020.

The consultants who had applied for the job did not fulfill its criteria. Therefore, PTA will invite EOI from local (Pakistani, AJ&K, and GB) consultants and consulting firms again. Consequently, the process is likely to be delayed, sources added.

A spokesperson for the PTA said that local consultancy is required for AJ&K and GB. Two local consultants were unable to submit the bids as per the Request for Proposal (RFP) which is why fresh bids that will not delay the process except for two weeks additional required for its completion are being called for, he added.

The consultant(s) or consulting firm(s) will carry out the assignment according to the detailed RFP which includes, but is not limited to the renewal of licenses, Additional Spectrum Auction, and a Spectrum Rationalization Plan.

The objective of the consultancy is to devise a strategy for the existing Mobile Cellular License Renewal and the Additional Spectrum Auction in 1800 and 2100 MHz bands in light of the international best practices that are suitable for AJ&K and GB’s telecommunications market, are focused on regulatory consistency for the investors, and for mobile broadband proliferation and the future sustainability of the cellular sector with an overall economic growth of the region.

One of the objectives is also Spectrum Rationalization or the Re-adjustment Plan with an objective to maximize efficient spectrum utilization in line with the international best practices for the assigned spectrum. The aim will be to assign the spectrum in a manner that will make a block size of contiguous frequencies by re-farming the existing assignments to make standardized block sizes.

Moreover, a transparent and competitive spectrum auction plan with an optimal outcome that promotes mobile broadband proliferation, the growth of cellular services, and the prevention of collusion between the bidders is required as per the consultancy assignment.

The PTA’s strategic vision is to create a fair regulatory regime to promote investment, to encourage competition, to protect consumers’ interests, and to ensure high-quality Information & Communication Technology (ICT) services.

The scope of work will include:

Conducting studies and assessments of the available or assigned spectrum in 900, 1800, and 2100 MHz in AJ&K and GB.

You’re Probably Using One Of The Worst Passwords in 2020

Password security has always been a dismal affair, no matter how you see it. As the year 2020 is nearing its end, we wanted to show you whether password security has improved in recent years. Going back half a decade, the most imprudent passwords commonly included ‘123456’, or just ‘password’.

Fast-forwarding 5 years, such examples are still very much prevalent.

According to NordPass, the most common passwords are easy to guess. It probably takes less than a second or two for hackers to break into online accounts using widely-used credentials. This statistic was determined after analyzing 275,699,516 passwords, which were leaked during data breaches in 2020.

Only 44% of Passwords Were Unique
NordPass published its annual report on password security on 18 November 2020. The report found that the most popular options for passwords were ‘123456’, ‘123456789’, ‘picture1’, ‘password’ and ‘12345678’. Except for ‘picture1’, which would reportedly take more than 3 hours to decrypt using a brute-force attack, each password mentioned here would typically take seconds using dictionary scripts or just basic human guesswork.

After going through a list of more than 200 people for a survey on password security and related affairs, NordPass arrived at a daunting conclusion. People still seem reluctant to use strong, difficult-to-crack passwords. Instead, they’re more comfortable with options like ‘football’, ‘iloveyou’, ‘letmein’ and ‘Pokémon’.

Here’s a list of the top 10 most common passwords of 2020, based on NordPass’ dataset:

What You Should Do
When deciding on a password, avoid patterns or permutations like letters or numbers next to each other on your computer’s keyboard. We recommend adding special characters or uppercase letters, which can help make passwords difficult to crack.

Do not use personal information like birthdays or names in your passwords as such information can be easily obtained.

Take responsibility for your accounts. Although vendors need reminding that allowing simple combinations and permutations do nothing to protect privacy and security, users should act more responsibly.

If it is difficult for you to remember complex passwords for different accounts, consider using a password manager.

LG Patents a Unique-Looking Rollable Laptop

The concept of rollable displays is becoming more popular ever since TCL, Oppo, and a few other tech giants showed off their versions of the technology on possible future devices. LG already has a rollable TV that goes for a whopping $60,000, but now the Korean company has published a patent for a rollable display laptop.

LG’s new patent shows a unique new laptop form factor that can unroll its display to have a 13.3-inch screen as well as a large 17-inch panel. Additionally, the images show that the keyboard and touchpad can also fold away to take less space, thus becoming even more portable than it already is.

In the image above, the laptop display can be seen extending from 13.3-inch size to 17-inches. The keyboard and touchpad can also be seen with the ability to fold in half thanks to two hinges on the right and left edge just underneath the keyboard. There are no details as to how this form factor works just yet.

However, as with every other design patent, we recommend taking the information with a grain of salt as these ideas often never go past the drafting stage.

Xiaomi Mi 11 Pro to Arrive with 120Hz Curved Screen, 108MP Triple Cameras, SD875

The launch of Xiaomi’s next flagship lineup, the Mi 11 series, is still a few months away and we are starting to get mixed reports on its specifications. In earlier reports, we heard that the Xiaomi Mi 11 would have a 50MP main camera but newer leaks are suggesting that it will have a 108MP triple camera setup instead.

The leak comes from XDA Developer’s Chief Editor Mishaal Rahman who claims that the Mi 11 is codenamed “Venus” and it will have a 108MP main sensor. The main sensor will be accompanied by a 30x zoom camera, and an ultrawide lens that will double as a macro camera.

What’s consistent in these leaks, however, is that all of them confirm the Snapdragon 875 SoC and a curved display. There are no other display details mentioned in this leak, but earlier reports have said that it will have a QHD+ resolution with a smooth 120Hz refresh rate. It will have a cornered punch-hole front camera as well.

The Xiaomi Mi 11 series is expected to break cover during January next year, around the same time as the Galaxy S21 lineup is expected to debut. More accurate and detailed leaks will surface as the launch date draws near, so stay tuned.

Intel’s New NUC M15 Offers Top of The Line Specs Starting at $999

Intel’s upcoming laptop will hit the market in the next few months, possibly February 2021. The new NUC M15 is designed in-house, and it’s the latest computer in the company’s expanding line of state-of-the-art laptops.

Intel reportedly won’t print its brand label on the lid, intending to supply the new series to prominent tech outlets who’d equip it with various storage configurations and brand it themselves. This kind of logistical pipeline is termed ‘white labeling’.

What’s Inside
Intel’s NUC M15 is an altogether different beast. Besides targeting gamers who prefer impressive performance statistics and robust cooling hardware at an attractive price, the company has basically created a premium productivity laptop.

Via The Verge
The screen – it’s a 15.6-inch display with 1080p resolution (touchscreen optional). According to Intel, there’s a 73 Watt-hour battery holding the fort which will last 16 hours on a single charge.

NUC M15 runs on Intel’s 11th Gen Core i5-1135G7 quad-core processor, upgradable to the 11th gen Core i7. Instead of packing the usual Nvidia GPU, the M15 uses Intel’s Iris Xe integrated GPU with 8GB RAM, expandable to 16GB in the twin-variant. Be advised: each hardware element comes soldered – you cannot get it upgraded after purchase!

A sleek aluminum finish covers what’s under the hood, with the full computer weighing 1.65 Kg and measuring 14.9mm thick.

Next up, flip up the screen to see what’s on the inside. There’s a standard well-paced keyboard with a large glass Windows Precision trackpad just below it. Two Thunderbolt 4/ USB 4.0 Type-C ports sit on the side, in addition to two USB-A 10GBps ports, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and an HDMI port.

Via The Verge
The USB-C ports sit on both ends, the only thing missing is an SD Card slot.
These specs sound a bit too familiar. We saw an almost identical spec-list on ASUS ZenBook 14 and Dell XPS 13. The major difference is the 15-inch display, most productivity laptops have 13-14 inch screens.

There are some other slight differences, such as an LED light bar in the front that works with Cortana. The light bar glows blue when you call out Cortana, somewhat similar to the Echo smart speaker. 4 microphones sit along the top edge of the lid so that your voice isn’t missed.

The M15 also has a Windows Hello-compatible webcam for facial login, plus a visual detection sequence that will wake the computer up as you approach it and log you in automatically. Talk about textbook – this is good news for a lot of techies out there!

What’s the Goal Behind Intel’s New Rig
Intel intends to provide a premium-level system to mid-tier companies to compete with tech giants like HP and Dell, whose level of investment in R&D-specific departments is impressive.

The M15 is without Intel’s signature Evo branding, denoting a certain level of performance and features. As for driver support, Intel has stated its goal to provide support for anything the company is involved in.

More NUC laptops will reportedly hit markets once the first phase of M15’s supply-chain is completed, according to sources close to Intel. The M15 is expected to go for as low as $999, to as high as $1,499, depending on hardware configurations before purchase.
