The British government has sought additional doses of AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine that has been modified to target the South African strain of Coronavirus.
It has also pledged to finance the clinical trials of AstraZeneca’s modified COVID-19 vaccine, which can be expedited through regulatory approvals after the enforcement of new laws in March this year.

The UK has already procured 100 million of AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine that has been developed in collaboration with the Oxford University.
As of May 31, the UK has administered a total of 65.2 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. Around 39.5 million people have received their first dose while 25.7 million people have received both doses, meaning 38.6% of the total UK population has been fully vaccinated against the Coronavirus.

In February this year, the South African government had suspended the use of AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine after it was reported that the vaccine provided minimal protection against mild and moderate infection caused by the country’s dominant variant, now known as the “beta” Coronavirus variant under the new labeling scheme of the WHO.
