PIA’s Operational Safety up to International Standards: Transport Canada

Following the closure of its safety audit, Transport Canada has declared Pakistan International Airlines’ (PIA) flight and operational airworthiness to be up to international standards.

It informed the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of PIA, Air Marshal (retd.) Arshad Malik, in a letter that all the concerns about the safety of its flight operations have been settled.

The letter read:

Transport Canada accepts that PIA has implemented the corrective actions to address the findings generated by the Foreign Operations Division Airworthiness Audit of Specific ICAO Airworthiness Elements dated 26 August 2020.

Transport Canada had conducted a separate audit of the national airline in August last year following a ban by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).

The safety validation and airworthiness audit that was conducted between 24 August and 24 September 2020 had exposed some issues pertaining to PIA’s operational safety that were then effectively addressed by the airline itself.

Transport Canada’s letter also stated that PIA had implemented long-term, systemic changes in its flight and airworthiness operations to enhance safety last year.

It added that PIA’s performance would remain under surveillance to ensure the continuity of corrective measures.

It also detailed that “Transport Canada will continue to carry out surveillance and oversight activities of PIA operations in Canada, which will allow us to evaluate the effectiveness of the long-term corrective action plan,” and expressed hope that PIA would maintain this standard of flight operations.

PIA had received a certificate of operational safety from the International Air Transport Association’s (IATA) Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) earlier this year, and the additional recognition from Transport Canada will help it improve its global reputation.
