KP to Hire 1,300 New Teachers

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) education department has decided to hire 1,300 teachers for its primary, middle, and high schools across the province.

The teachers will be hired on one-year contracts through the parent-teacher council (PCT) – a body consisting of the administration of the school, parents of the students enrolled, and local elders.

Dawn.com reported quoting education department officials that an amount of Rs. 400 million has already been earmarked for the appointment of teachers, of which Rs. 200 million would be spent on hiring teachers for primary schools and the remaining amount for middle and higher schools across the province.

According to officials, 725 teachers would be appointed for primary schools, 373 teachers for middle schools, and 142 for high schools.

The director of the elementary and secondary education department, Hafiz Ibrahim, said that Rs. 20,000 salaries would be paid to the teachers of primary schools, Rs. 25,000 to the teachers of middle schools and Rs. 30,000 to the teachers of high schools.

To a question that Rs. 20,000 salary for primary teachers is less than the minimum wage for the unskilled labor, he said that the amount was approved a few months earlier when the minimum wage was Rs. 17,500. He added that the salaries of the primary school teachers will be revised before hiring them.

The director also noted that the department aims to hire 1,200 information technology teachers and heads of information technology laboratories through PTC for 600 IT labs that are being built at various schools with a cost of Rs. 2 billion.
