Fawad Chaudhry Lashes Out At Judiciary Over TikTok Ban

In response to the Sindh High Court’s (SHC) verdict against TikTok, the Minister for Information, Fawad Chaudhry, has warned that the country will never be able to escape economic obstructions if the judiciary continues to intervene in matters of digital growth.

While expressing his perspective in a tweet, the minister seemed “baffled after reading yesterday’s verdicts on the suspension of TikTok”. He blamed “judicial activism” for causing losses worth billions in the technology sector, something that could worsen if the judicial reforms are not introduced soon.

This is not the first time that Fawad Chaudry has denounced the role of the judiciary in meting out inappropriate verdicts against digital apps like TikTok.

In February, he had resorted to pleading “with judges not to hear cases relating to digital media,” and stressed that Pakistan would never be able to attract foreign investments if the state policy on the technology industry is not addressed.

Meanwhile, TikTok is considering the possible ramifications of the SHC’s judgment and has stated in its defense that it has “robust policies, processes and technologies” for reviewing immoral/violent content.

For now, the ban will remain enforced until further notice.
