Taxpayers Allowed to File Settlement Application for Agreed Assessment

In a major departure from the past practice, the government has allowed taxpayers to file settlement application for agreed assessment by inserting a new section 122D in the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001 through Finance Act 2020.

Recently FBR has instructed its field formations to establish oversight committees as envisaged in the law. Taxpayers whose cases have been selected in audit and have been confronted through a show-cause may avail this opportunity by applying online to the settlement committee, conveying this intention to go for agreed assessment and tax payable thereon.

The Committee will decide the case within 30 days of the filing of the application by the taxpayer. The government is expecting that a large number of taxpayers under scrutiny will avail this opportunity.

This will decrease the pressure on available FBR resources which are being spent on litigation and will provide instant relief to the taxpayers.

Pakistan Issues Tenders for Import of Three LNG Cargoes

The state-owned liquefied natural gas (LNG) importer, Pakistan LNG Limited (PLL), has issued tenders for the import of three LNG cargoes of 140,000 cubic meters each, for March 2021, amidst increasing demand for energy caused by the winter season.

PLL floated a tender to import LNG cargoes of 420,000 cubic meters through an advertisement, saying that the country is seeking this LNG to be delivered in three delivery windows, on March 9-10, March 16-17, and March 22-23 on a delivered ex-ship basis. The deadline to submit bids for the tender is January 15.

The petroleum division has informed that the city loads have already increased by more than 9 percent in Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) due to a severe cold wave. Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) also faces a similar situation in Karachi and Quetta.

According to the estimates, every 1 degree Celsius decrease in the temperature translates into an additional six mmcfd demand per day. This is in addition to the usual daily gas demand of approximately 7.5 billion cubic feet per day. Currently, the local production of LNG is short by 3.5 billion cubic feet per day as compared to the daily demand.

Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) predicts this supply-demand gap to rise even further, to approximately 2.7 billion cubic feet by 2023 and 4.8 billion cubic feet by 2028. This gap is filled through imports.

LNG imports account for 24 percent of the country’s total import mix. In the past five years, approximately 19 million tons of LNG have been imported by Pakistan.

OnePlus Shows Off 8T Concept Phone With a Color Changing Back

OnePlus is not yet done with concept devices for the year. The company has revealed yet another concept model, and this time it is for the OnePlus 8T. It is simply named the OnePlus 8T Concept and it showcases what the company has been working on.

The OnePlus 8T Concept has a unique looking rear panel that comes with a color-changing film under the back glass. This film is made out of metal oxide which can change colors when different voltages are applied to it. This is why it is able to change colors between silver and dark blue.

OnePlus says that this color-changing rear panel could be used as a notification system in the future.

Another feature that distinguishes this phone from the rest is its mmWave radar system that is able to send and receive electromagnetic waves. This allows the radar system to image, locate, and track objects with ease in any lighting conditions. This gives it an edge over the optical ToF system.

OnePlus says that this could be used for gestures that would, for instance, allow you to accept and dismiss calls. It could also be used to track the movements of your chest and make for a reliable breathing monitor app.

However, similar to the OnePlus Concept One, the OnePlus 8T Concept is not meant to go for sale

Kane Williamson Returns to Lead New Zealand For Pakistan Tests

New Zealand has announced their Test squad for the upcoming series against Pakistan. All-rounder, Mitchell Santner retains his place in the squad in place of left-arm spinner, Ajaz Patel.

Patel was expected to be a part of the squad after recovering from a lengthy lay-off due to injury, but the selectors went for Mitchell Santner to provide more balance to their line-up. Santner would play as a bowling all-rounder at 7th position, with four other fast bowlers in the team.

“It’s really unfortunate for Ajaz, who has overcome his calf injury, but the all-round ability of Mitchell Santner is our preferred option for this series. The fact Ajaz hasn’t been able to have any game-time in the lead-up was also a concern for the selectors,” coach Gary Stead said.

Kane Williamson returns to the Test squad after missing the second Test match against West Indies due to the birth of his child. He will lead the New Zealand team in the two-match Test series.

Meanwhile, Pakistan captain, Babar Azam, and opening batsman, Imam-ul-Haq, have been ruled out of the first Test due to injuries. Both the batsmen suffered fractured thumbs in a practice session last week. Mohammad Rizwan, will captain the side in the first Test match.
