Seemingly impossible to contain, the Coronavirus has swept across 125 countries and territories since it first broke out in Wuhan, China, at the end of last year.
According to latest reports, COVID-19 (as the virus strain is commonly known) has infected nearly 134,769 people and killed 4,983 people.
Italy and Iran remain the most affected countries with 1,016 and 429 deaths respectively outside China, the epicenter of the disease.
Keeping the ever-deteriorating situation in mind, the World Health Organization has declared the COVID-19 outbreak as a pandemic.
However, epidemiologists at Harvard University have projected that the number of infections and deaths is nothing compared to what is going to happen in months to come.
Experts have claimed that nearly 70% of the world’s population will contract the Coronavirus and that 1% of the entire population is projected to die from the affliction.
Marc Lipsitch, Director of the Center for Communicable Disease Dynamics at Harvard University, says that it is impossible to stop the outbreak of Coronavirus now.
Lipsitch states that Coronavirus is about 10 times bigger than SARS and MERS that broke out in 2003 and 2012 respectively. COVID-19 is way more prevalent than SARS and MERS at this point.
The only way to contain the outbreak of Coronavirus is to avoid human-to-human contact as much as possible. All kinds of public gatherings should be barred either by legal authorities or voluntarily.
Notwithstanding the havoc this disease will wreak, it would not be enough to bring down humankind to its knees but things will remain terrible for a while, epidemiologists have stated.
